How we celebrated International Women’s Day 2018

On the 8th of March last week, International Women’s Day was celebrated all over the world. On this special day Hamro Palo attended a rally in Kathmandu planned by Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare. In the rally we highlighted the overall theme of this year’s IWD; #PressForProgress, but we also joined in on the group cause of #RageAgainstRape. The rally started at Bhrikuti Mandap and continued all the way to Ratna Park, where people gathered and continued the celebrations. Representatives from women groups and activists working in the field of women’s empowerment also joined the rally.

On the 9th of March Hamro Palo celebrated IWD in a closing ceremony at one of the schools where we had been hosting one of our 24 days long His Chance Empowerment Workshops. The closing ceremony took place at Jhirpu secondary school in Bhotekoshi 4, Sindhupalchowk, where 99 boys had been participating. Last year we conducted our Her Turn Workshop at the same school.

The school faculty, community members, parents and other students were invited to come and experience the closing ceremony. The closing ceremony focused on International Women’s Day, where the boys and girls performed songs, dances, dramas, poems and speeches they composed, to show their talents and share their learnings from the workshop. The adolescents advocated on various issues they experience and raise awareness on social malpractice. The principal and teachers from the school and some of the boys and girls gave speeches about International Women’s Day, international women’s issues, the workshop and why is important for boys to support girls. The children also had the opportunity to get their picture taken in our International Women’s Day 2018 Photo Booth.

It was a very successful day, where the children enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun with their performances. We made a video, where you can see the highlights from the day and some of the performances, we hope you enjoy watching it!

On the 10th of March a IWD 5k fun run was organized and some of our staff participated in the run. Participants from our Her Turn workshop in Shree Chilaune Secondary School also participated in the run which was amazing to see. Two of them came second and third in the run. The run was a fun way to end the International Women’s Day celebrations.
